Male Liposuction
Liposuction is a popular, effective, and minimally-invasive technique to remove stubborn fat pockets that just don’t respond to diet and exercise. Most men find great results with fat removal in the love handles, stomach and chest. These areas respond well if they have skin with good elasticity, meaning it can accommodate the new contour and will not need to be surgically excised. This is usually determined by a lack of wrinkles, stretch marks or sagginess. During your consultation with Dr. Carpenter, he can assess whether you might also benefit from surgical skin reduction or other procedures.
Why Male Liposuction?
It should be understood that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and is most effective for removing disproportionate pockets of fat in the body. Men tend to accumulate fat in different areas of the body than women do, demanding different approaches or techniques. Although liposuction is minimally invasive, it beats non-invasive procedures hands down, and is still the most effective way to remove unwanted fat from under the skin. This procedure is preferable for some men because it only requires one treatment and has minimal downtime, compared to many non-invasive techniques which require multiple treatments. Laser assisted liposuction “Smartlipo” is an excellent treatment for gynecomastia, or male breasts.
What is a Male Liposuction Procedure Like?
During your consultation with Dr. Carpenter, he can determine what liposuction technique will best achieve your results. Liposuction can generally be performed with local or general anesthesia, depending on how much fat will be removed. It is an outpatient procedure. After anesthesia has been administered, a small incision is made at the treatment area, through which the cannula is inserted. The cannula is then manipulated to break up the fat, which is subsequently suctioned by the vacuum. Once the right amount has been removed, the incision is closed and dressed. A compression garment is then applied.
Recovery and Results
During your consultation, Dr. Carpenter will make sure you understand what your recovery will look like and what steps you’ll need to take. This can include wearing compression garments in the treatment area to help with blood flow and aid the skin in adhering to the new contour. You may want a few days of downtime before returning to work, although many patients return to work the following day. You can expect some bruising and swelling at the treatment site, but this subsides over the course of a few weeks.
