Endo Vein Laser Treatment (EVLT) at Allegany Vein Clinic
Endo Vein Laser Treatment (EVLT) has revolutionized the treatment of varicose veins especially the large veins that traditionally required surgery. This therapy uses heat applied skillfully to the inside of the varicose vein causing it to close. This treatment is highly effective and well tolerated and usually results in minimal to no downtime.
What is EVLT?
EVLT or Endo Venous Laser Treatment is a minimally invasive laser treatment that is performed in the privacy of our office by a board certified interventional radiologist. From start to finish, the procedure takes about an hour to complete and is done completely under local anesthesia. EVLT is typically covered by most insurance plans. EVLT has revolutionized the treatment of large varicose veins where traditional surgery was once required.
How does EVLT work?
With EVLT a small fiber optic catheter is inserted through a needle under ultrasound guidance into the varicose vein. The catheter is advanced to the desired location and the laser activated. The catheter is then slowly withdrawn heating the vein and causing it to close. The blood in the vein is rerouted to healthy veins. EVLT is most useful for large varicose veins; however, if the varicose vein is too small or too twisted may require sclerotherapy instead.
What are the side effects of EVLT?
Aside from some mild soreness that may last several days there are very few side effects reported with EVLT.
What is recovery like from EVLT?
Recovery after EVLT is uncomplicated and may require a day of rest. Compression stockings are required for 1-2 weeks after the treatment.
