Trained as an artist and naturally gifted with exceptional surgical precision, Dr. Carpenter chose to pursue plastic surgery because he saw it as a way to blend his artistic and surgical gifts. (“Plus,” he says, “it’s a really cool job.”) After he pursued his BA in Biology at The College of William and Mary and his MD at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he completed a general surgical residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and a plastic surgical residency at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution. He settled in the mountains of Cumberland, Maryland to establish his private practice in 1995. He is Board-Certified in Plastic Surgery and a member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In cooperation with the Crippled Children’s League, Dr. Carpenter developed and is Medical Director of the Cumberland Cleft Clinic, an organization established to provide coordinated services for children with cleft lip and palate deformities, regardless of their ability to pay.
